Abstract In this paper, we study the vibrational populations of diatomic molecules in infrared fields using algebraic approach, and obtain the explicit analytical expression of the transition probability. The influences of frequency, intensity and pulse duration on the vibrational populations, which belong to, respectively, the ground state and the first excited state of vibration in NaCl and LiH molecular systems, are discussed.
