Study of solid state cathodoluminescence in organic phosphors

Abstract: The devices with sandwiched structure are prepared by compounding tris (2-phenylpyridine) iridium (Ir(PPY)3) with SiO2. The green emission of Ir(PPY)3 at 517nm and blue electroluminescence at 435nm are obtained from the devices under AC voltage. Both the green and the blue emission are attributed to the solid-state cathodoluminescence (SSCL) of Ir(PPY)3 excited by hot electrons which are accelerated in SiO2. Phosphorescent SSCL is confirmed after the realization of SSCL on organic polymers and organic small molecules tris-(8-quinolinolato)aluminum (Alq3).
