    Group theory is introduced into the calculation of photonic band gap with the plane wave expansion method, and improved calculation formulae are derived. Both the analysis and the practical band gap calculation for an exemplary twodimensional case have shown that, as compared with the conventional plane wave method, the group theory based improved algorithm can substantially release memoryspace requirement and reduce computational time.
